Burying their heads in the sand

There seems to be agreement in Southend that homelessness is a growing problem. I’ve certainly not spoken to anyone at all who says otherwise. Having visited HARP recently, there is absolutely no doubt that their help is in ever greater demand. Every week brings new housing cases to us, the council’s housing waiting list has reached ridiculous proportions. I cannot believe that this is a phenomenon unique to Southend either.

Here is some data that suggests homelessness has risen 25% over the past three years across the country. That certainly feels believable to me.

Why then do ministers persist in burying their heads in the sand over the problem?
